Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo

The good, the bad, and the ugly.

Over the past few months, I've noticed my scarring from past acne vulgaris, getting much worse. While I've been able to rid myself of new acne eruptions since 2009 (from being on Accutane for 6 months), the scars are not going away. Unfortunately, in the past month, new eruptions have definitely started up again.

I ignored the worsening of the scars during the past few months and thought maybe the scars were due to dry skin in the wintertime, maybe stress, who knows. While stress is one of the causes for acne, I wasn't convinced that it was the sole reason for the worsening of these scars.

I turned to my makeup and my skincare products. Over the years, I've avoided products containing heavy perfume (irritant), oil (pore clogger), and alcohol (drying effects).

This time though, I dug deeper (no pun intended)...

Important Resources:

1) Books
Here are a few books that I've purchased over the past couple of years. I neglected them for a couple of years, but re-visited them this week:
  • 6 Weeks to Sensational Skin by Loretta Ciraldo, MD
  • Beautiful Skin of Color: A Comprehensive Guide to Asian, Olive, and Dark Skin by Jeanine Downey
  • Brown Skin: Dr. Susan Taylor's Prescription for Flawless Skin, Hair, and Nails by Susan C. Taylor
2) Ingredients List
I think many beauty product enthusiasts already know who she is. I'm referring to Paula Begoun. The list shows all (or 99%) of ingredients used in beauty products, cosmetics, skin care. Click here to view the list.

3) Scale of comedogenic and irritant potential list
Here's another great page I came across, which demonstrates common ingredients used in products, and grading them between 0 to 5 for being comedogenic or being an irritant. Click here to view the list.

My next post will show you which products I've had to eliminate in my quest for healthier skin.

See you shortly!
